Goal

  • To encounter and experience God as disciples of Jesus Christ through formation in the Catholic Faith.

Requirements for Preparation

  • To attend Mass at Sacred Heart or Our Lady of Sorrows on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation. High School students will be required to sign in to show they've attended Mass. If you're out of town, then you must have the priest sign the bulletin where you did attend Mass and bring it to your catechist.
  • To receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation once a year and receive Holy Communion at least during the Easter Season.

The Precepts of the Church (CCC #2041-2042):

2041 The precepts of the Church are set in the context of a moral life bound to and nourished by liturgical life. The obligatory character of these positive laws decreed by the pastoral authorities is meant to guarantee to the faithful the very necessary minimum in the spirit of prayer and moral effort, in the growth in love of God and neighbor:

2042 The first precept ("You shall attend Mass on Sundays and on holy days of obligation and rest from servile labor") requires the faithful to sanctify the day commemorating the Resurrection of the Lord…82

The second precept ("You shall confess your sins at least once a year.") ensures preparation for the Eucharist by the reception of the sacrament of reconciliation, which continues Baptism's work of conversion and forgiveness.83

Notes
82. Cf. CIC, cann. 1246-1248; CCEO, can. 880 § 3, 881 §§ 1, 2, 4.
83. Cf. CIC, can. 989; CCEO, can. 719.

  • To attend 15 Sessions of High School Catechism in the parish for your Freshman, Sophomore and Junior year. (There are three years of formation to prepare for the Sacrament of Confirmation. Attendance will be taken. You should not miss any catechism sessions. If you do, you must bring a viable written excuse to your catechist. (Example of a viable excuse: a death in the family.) If you are not present for a catechism session, then you will have to write an essay on the topic presented to make up the missed session.

Diocesan Policy for the Diocese of Alexandria, LA (Art. 1020, par. 8, #4):

Art. 1020, §8, 4°

Requirements: The parish is the faith community into which the candidate is seeking to be more fully initiated. Remote preparation for this sacrament begins with baptism and continues through years of catechesis and involvement in the parish community. Candidates must have had several years (more than two (2) years) of catechesis prior to confirmation preparation. There must be evidence that those who are celebrating this sacrament are practicing their faith by regular participation in the Eucharist.

  • To attend an overnight High School S.A.L.T. Retreat at Maryhill. (Must be present for the entire retreat.)
  • To attend the Steubenville South Conference once while in High School. (Must attend the whole conference.)
  • Fifteen hours of community service in the parish each year. Any volunteer service in the parish counts for community service hours.
  • Non-Parishioners who want to be confirmed at Sacred Heart are required to get a Letter of Permission from their Pastor.

High School catechism will be held on Sundays in person only for Confirmation Class at 3:50 P.M. and includes 5:00 P.M. Holy Mass, except during holidays and special events (such as School Fair). There will be 15 catechism sessions in the year. Please see High School Catechism Schedule for the dates.

All other grades are participating in home learning/online activities/studies.

*High School students in Catholic school will not be required to attend catechism sessions their Freshman years since they have religion class at school, but they will be required to attend catechism sessions their Sophomore and Junior year, since the formation will be specifically to prepare for the sacrament of confirmation. All other requirements do apply to High School students in Catholic schools.
